[இப்பொழுது BCE = Before Current / Common Era CE = Current / Common Era என்றுதான் சரித்திரத்தில் குறிப்பிடப் படுகின்றன].

Indian merchant guild did penetrate south China with Hinduism. Evidences are available for this. Dated to thirteenth century and credited to Late T N Subramaniam, for recognising in 1956, from Quanzhou, a famous medievval port in South China, is an important inscription. The inscription is engraved in two stones (originally a single stone) part in Tamil and part in Chinese. I have already posted the picture of this (DR. N Kannan) in the inscription site.
In 1281, a merchant (Tamilian) called Champanda Perumal, with the permission of Chechai Khan (son of Kubla Khan?) built a siva temple, called it after Khan as ThiruKhaneeswar, at Quanzhou.
Probably in late 13th century, the Tamil merchants withdrew from China, due, may be to, political reasons, and if they had not, THERE WOULD HAVE BEEN MUCH MORE HINDU INFLUENCE in China as well.
This has to be studied with the weakening Pandyas in Tamilnadu, and later decline of Chola as well during this period of history. Religions were, are and always will be part of political system even if people from roof top shout about secularism. This happened with all religions and all countries.
Studying in isolation a particular religion without political background, therefore does not help at all.

I’m aware of this inscription. My point was that one need not despair
that Hinduism did not strike root overseas. One has to take an
inclusive view of various Indian religious traditions and take comfort
in the fact that Buddhism indeed has. On the other hand, that same
Buddhism seemed to have died out in India – point of the original
question.
To look at this question, one needs to look at what happens when a
religious tradition seemingly ‘dies’ out. Look at various strands of
Siva worship – each of which was distinct from the others at least as
far as its adherents are concerned – and see how all of them have got
subsumed under one rubric, that of Saivism. Inscriptions talk of
Saivas, kapalikas as distinct groups. Even as late as the 1400’s, the
composer Annamayya talks of Saivas worshiping Siva and Kapalikas
worshiping Adi Bhairava as distinct groups.
Likewise the traditions of Vishnu-Krishna worship e.g., Krishna as
cowherd, Narayana as the supreme god, the worship of the trio Krishna-
Balarama-Subadhra (as in Puri even today) all of which were distinct
in history, all have over the ages got assimilated under one single
Vaishnava religion.
This process has obviously been ongoing in history itself. For
example, the paripATal talks of an image of Krishna and Balarama in
the KaLLazakar temple in Madurai but just a few centuries later
there’s no Balarama image. In fact, in the Sangam times, there was
also a distinct tradition of worshiping the 5 heroes of the Vrshni
group as seen in the aimpaTaittAli. This tradition has disappeared. In
fact there’s hardly any Balarama worship in Tamilnadu.
Obviously so what happened when Buddhism ‘disappeared’? Many of its
myths were adopted by Tamil Saivism, as many modern historians tell
you. That’s one sure sign of a set of adherents of a tradition being
accommodated under another tradition. But like Adibhairava is
accommodated as Siva, it would perhaps be harder though not
inconceivable, that Buddha be accommodated as Siva. Tamil Buddhists
were around in Tamilnadu, I’m sure, till as late as the 14th century.
So where did they disappear as their numbers steadily diminished –
that’s an interesting question. To illuminate this question, you must
look at Saivism and other traditions in Tamilnadu today e.g., Aiyanar
worship, ayyappan worship etc. Looking at Buddhism alone will not
necessarily be illuminative. Maybe an influential segment emigrated to
Ceylon. But we also know, as Prof Stanley Thambiah tells us, that
these Tamil Buddhists (as did other Tamils) over the centuries adopted
Sinhala as their mother tongue. So where did the Tamil Buddhists go –
perhaps nowhere. They’re still amongst us. As a question, it’s not
very different from the question say, ‘where did the Kapalikas go?’ or
‘where did the Balarama worshippers go?’
btw, was this Siva temple at Guangzhou meant for the use of the guild
members who were obviously Saiva’s or was it for the local populace.
But almost 700 years before this Siva temple, the Tang dynasty had
declared Buddhism as a state religion. This was on the strength of
individual bhikshu’s etc, not some imperial conquest. That was what I
had wanted to say.
Hope this helps,

According to N Karashima, the inscription coming chronologically first is the one in Wat Thong Museum in southern Thailand. In Tamil Brahmi letters “perum pattan kal” This is the earliest Tamil Brahmi writing in SE Asia.
This stone indicates the migration of a Tamil Goldsmith and was found in a place called bead mound – obviously where beads works were undertaken.
Tauka Pa inscription now preserved in Nakhon Si Thammarat museum, and was discovered along with a stone Vishnu and and other statues of Pallava style.
The Tamil inscription mentions that a tank was constructed by someone and put under care of Manikkramaththar , senamugattar, and another similar body. Manikramam is a famous merchant guild flourished in ninth to fourteenth centuries in Tamilnadu and Kerala.
The next Tamil inscription is from Barus, in NW Sumatra
Karashima details all of tehm in his article.

Yup, I should have used “Brahmanism” than “Hinduism”. Oh Well, I
thought Brahmanism is derogatory and offensive. Anyways
//But in the long run
they have not been very loyal to Indian cultural influence either.
When the wind blew Islam they seem to have inclined towards it. //
The people still have a Dharmic feel. Which the Islamists are trying
hard to remove all dharmic traces. rewriting textbooks, erasing
history and blah blah blah.(you know what those guys do .. )
//In China however, Buddhism has
strictly been an Indian intellectual export. Buddhism in Korea and
Japan were secondary intellectual exports from India, with China as a
via media. //
So ?
—-
When the Chinese, first translated the Agamas, do you think Hinduism
(as we know now ) existed then ? Given, that the Vaidika Tradition
then, was quite distinct from the Buddhist Traditions.
As per your terms, Using Hinduism and Buddhism are Ant-Historical ;
And you claim, Buddhism is export quality Hinduism, and contradict
your own statements ?
—-
Why don’t you elaborate and qualify your statement on Buddhism being
“Export Quality” Hinduism ?
